Your Skills, Our Beaches: Teach for Beach in Santa Cruz, Marinduque Leads the Way for "Voluntourism" at the Heart of the Philippines

Are you searching for a travel experience that’s meaningful, inspiring, and unforgettable? Do you dream of making a difference while immersing yourself in a stunning island paradise? Welcome to Teach for Beach, a groundbreaking voluntourism program in Marinduque, Philippines, where your skills can empower communities while you explore breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural traditions.

Tourism promotion is often a one-way exchange, where destinations market their appeal and travelers consume curated experiences. However, for places like Santa Cruz, Marinduque—a quiet, rustic municipality far from the bustling crowds of the Philippines’ more famous tourist hubs—there is an opportunity to redefine this dynamic. While Marinduque has gained recognition for its Moriones Festival and scenic beaches, its tourism potential remains largely untapped, particularly in communities like Santa Cruz, where residents are eager to learn how to attract more visitors and make tourism a sustainable part of their local economy.

This is where Teach for Beach comes in. First launched in 2017–2018, this initiative emerged as a groundbreaking approach to tourism promotion in Marinduque. It blends community capacity building with experiential travel, creating a mutually beneficial relationship between visitors and locals. Piloted with students from various universities in Metro Manila, the program facilitated workshops on youth development, youth empowerment, and tourism development, laying the groundwork for community-driven growth.

This year, Teach for Beach returns to invite travelers to discover Marinduque’s understated charm while contributing to its development. It incentivizes travel to places like Santa Cruz—off the beaten path yet rich with potential—by offering participants immersive experiences in exchange for skills-sharing workshops tailored to the needs of local communities.

A Collaborative Approach to Tourism

Developed in partnership with the Municipal Tourism Office of Santa Cruz and the I Love Santa Cruz Collective, Teach for Beach transforms the typical tourist experience into a platform for education, empowerment, and cultural exchange. Instead of passively consuming what the destination offers, travelers become active participants in shaping its future.

Through this program, visitors conduct workshops that enhance the capacities of local groups, from creative artists to coastal stewards, while enjoying guided tours of Marinduque’s natural and cultural landmarks. The result is a tourism model that uplifts communities while providing visitors with an authentic and enriching experience.

Communities at the Heart of the Initiative

Teach for Beach focuses on empowering five key community groups in Santa Cruz, each working toward sustainable tourism and cultural preservation:

  • Botilao Tourist Services Cooperative: Responsible for Hakupan Island’s eco-tourism development, this group emphasizes marine conservation, environmental education, and sustainable practices.
  • I Love Santa Cruz Collective Artventure Artists: Renowned for their hand-painted Moryon Wearable Art, these artists seek to expand their creative and technical skills to capture broader tourism markets.
  • I Love Santa Cruz Collective Performing Arts Group: Local youth aspiring to become storytellers and performers, offering tours and cultural narratives that reflect Marinduque’s rich heritage.
  • Dapdap Beach Community: Creating a Roman-inspired beach experience, this community is crafting an attraction centered on history, architecture, and immersive storytelling.
  • Tanim Pag-asa Program Households: A farming initiative promoting backyard agriculture and agritourism, showcasing sustainable food production and rural livelihoods.

Workshops: Bridging Skills and Aspirations

Participants are encouraged to design workshops that resonate with the needs and aspirations of these communities. Examples of workshops include:

  • Fashion Design and Crafting for Tourist Markets: Equip local artists with skills in creating clothing, accessories, and souvenirs tailored for tourism markets.
  • Environmental Education and Sustainability: Focus on marine conservation, waste reduction, and eco-friendly practices to enhance Hakupan Island’s sustainable tourism efforts.
  • Performing Arts and Presentation Skills: Train youth in storytelling, choreography, and public speaking to elevate their performances and guide interactions.
  • Sports and Wellness Activities: Promote physical health and community bonding through activities like yoga, fitness training, or recreational sports.
  • Agriculture and Agritourism: Provide insights into organic farming, food tourism, and farm trail development to diversify income streams for local households.
  • History and Cultural Reconstruction: Assist the Dapdap Beach community in creating immersive narratives and historically informed experiences around their Roman-themed camp.

A New Model for Tourism

This approach prioritizes local agency, ensuring that communities remain the architects of their futures while benefiting from the knowledge and resources that visitors bring.
