In 1996, the Philippines suffered one of its worst environmental disasters.
It happened at the then prosperous town of Santa Cruz in the Province of Marinduque when pipes of the large-scale open-pit mine of Marcopper Mining Corporation were damaged causing tons of toxic mine tailings to leak in waterways across Marinduque Province. Marcopper’s primary mines were located in the villages of San Antonio, Makulapnit, Kilo-Kilo, and Libjo in the town of Santa Cruz. More than twenty-years have passed since and the people of Santa Cruz have but completely healed from the collective trauma and impact of the disaster that has upended many lives.
